CDMX, DF, aka Mexico City, Mexico
Who knew a little small-town kid’s initial impressions of Mexico City could be so wrong? My first visit was a sensory explosion—loud, vast, and frankly, a bit daunting. I distinctly recall holding my little sister’s hand like a lifeline and my mom patiently (or perhaps not-so-patiently!) listening to my repeated protests. It's truly amazing how perspectives change, because two and a half decades later, this incredible metropolis has unequivocally captured my affection!
Today, Mexico City is simply captivating. You feel its pulse even before landing; from the plane window, the city stretches out, alive and buzzing. It's undeniably the heart and brain of Mexico, a bustling cultural hub offering everything from a lively arts scene and phenomenal restaurants to an abundance of fascinating museums. Imagine standing in a single public plaza where ancient pre-Hispanic structures, grand colonial churches, and sleek modern skyscrapers stand side-by-side—it's a breathtaking sight unique to this place.
The city is a tapestry of vibrant neighborhoods, each with its unique identity. Discover the upscale sophistication of Polanco, the artistic vibe of La Condesa, or the historical layers of the Centro Histórico. Mexico City truly offers an experience for everyone, and I find a new local treasure every time I go. I'm always eager to return and delve deeper into its endless charms!

Though I've explored Mexico City before, my last visit was incredibly smooth. I was impressed by how effortlessly I navigated the city, from quick Uber rides to leisurely bike tours through the Centro Histórico – I never once felt lost! My main reason for this trip was to join a friend for a Monday Night Football game: Raiders vs. Texans at Estadio Azteca. Being among 78,000 fervent fans was an absolutely magical and unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was so incredible, the NFL even scheduled a repeat in 2017!
Preparing for this adventure was simple. Direct flights to MEX are abundant from major US cities, and as an SFO traveler, I appreciate the quick, less-than-4-hour journey. I efficiently booked my United flight using points from my Chase Sapphire credit card. For lodging, I secured a lovely 2-bedroom Airbnb in the Polanco neighborhood, an ideal base for its famous culinary scene.
We landed in Mexico City after a red-eye flight, eager to explore. Our Uber ride from the terminal was swift, thanks to the early hour. Our driver, Lupita, was so warm and engaging that our chat continued long after the drop-off. These spontaneous encounters are truly a highlight of travel! Lupita even suggested a trip to the magnificent Teotihuacan pyramids (less than an hour away and a definite must-see). Another fantastic day trip idea is to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of Xochimilco, enjoying food, drinks, and mariachi on its famous canals.
For gastronomy enthusiasts, Mexico City is unparalleled. Its food scene ranges from incredible corner taco stands and vibrant Mercado food stalls offering authentic street flavors, all the way to dining at some of the Top 50 Restaurants in the World
